Hi everyone! My friend and i, two girls in our early 20's from perth WA, are going on the european escapade tour departing July 24 09. After the tour we are travelling around on our own for a couple more months back to places we really liked or didnt get to see etc. Just a question on handbags etc, ive heard all these really scary stories about how good pick pocketers are in parts of europe and that you shouldnt carry a handbag but should have a money belt under your clothes instead? Im a bit freaked out at that idea coz i like my big handbag! Ill have a backpack with me while im on day trips etc but just wondering for like when im just out shopping or going out to a pub? Anyone been before and have any advice??

Hi. Ok, I live in Spain, so I don't know where all you are going to be traveling, but the pickpocketers here are quite skilled. I would suggest trying not to call attention to you; no designer handbags, don't take your money out on the streets/metro, and just PAY ATTENTION. Most girls here where purses that cross your body, for added security. Also, backpacks are sometimes easier than purses to steal from, since you can't possibly feel everything touching your bag, so be careful with that during your tours as well.
The biggest thing I would suggest, is that when you and your friend are out touring around alone try to blend in. If you look like a tourist, you are a target. You're fine in the tour group, but this is really important when you are in smaller groups.
As long as you pay attention to your belongings and your surroundings you should be fine.
I like large bags as well, and I carry one everyday, it's just when you put it down (at a cafe, etc) keep your leg or arm touching it at all times.
Ok, well hope that helps,

Katie

Ilast year and never had a problem. In Paris, the gypsies have their children do it or distract you while someone else pickpockets you. Just make sure your purse zips up so you can't just slip your hand in and keep it clutched wuth your arm across it, never leave it away from your body, for backpacks: i put little luggage locks on all the big pockets and then unlocked it whenever i needed someone, it may seem like a lot of hassle but its better to be safe than sorry. my parents are from europe and go back all the time, they've never had a problem, just dont keep anything in your pockets, and keep your purse as tight to you as you can. you'll be ok. =)
