I have just returned from the UE a week ago now and decided to have a look back at the posts and came across yours. What I found worked for me (and was advised by our tour manager) is to carry enough money on you for about 3 days.
Now depending on how much drinking you are going to do could determine how expencive it can get. I sugest you find a place to get alcohol and pre-drink before you go to the bar because the price of drinks in Europe will shock you! Some places we went charged 5.5 euro for an ounce of rum and then an other 6 euro for the coke to mix it with! Like I said....PRE-DRINK! I found having about 300 euro on you at all times worked for me, just be careful cause sometimes you can go DAYS without being in a place that you can find a bank machine. I would NOT recomend traveler's checks as they are a pain in the a$$ to find a place that will cash them and they charge a heafty fee for them. I took the Egypt option and used my visa to get money out of bank machines everywhere we went. I never had 1 problem with getting money in any place we went. Some of the Aussies on our trip had a few problems with Travelex cards but for the most part those work as well. If you want to know any more about money or the trip as a whole feel free to email me (pauljason_23@hotmail.com) and I will try and respond when I can! All I can say is that the UE is truely a trip of a lifetime and I would not trade it for anything! Just have a read of Dave Challenger's travel blog and find out for yourself! My friend and I are going to go on the UE trip and I dont know what I should bring for money. If I use my debit I will have to pay a fee every time and that can add up. Have you heard about the pre payed visa? Do you think that will help or will it be a hinderence?

You could go with a prepaid visa too....I think the Aussies had them (Travelex card or something like that) but in some places they also found that they didn't work, it is really up to you. I found the best thing to do was to have 300 Euro on me at all times.
On an other note do not waste your time getting travel visas before you leave, they are cheaper and easy to get at the borders when you get there.....hope this helps Cheers, Paul Ultimate European July 1, 2007 |

hey everyone, i'm going the May 11th EU and the pre-paid visas with travelex are supposed to be the best thing, we have it in Australia and it's called a cash passport. We can get them from any Australia Post Office or most travel agents have them. They are just an ATM visa card the can ONLY be used at the ATM not in stores or anything, and you have your money put on the card and its converted straight to the currency of your choice, pretty cool. I think there is a small fee for each transaction but it cheaper then using your credit card everywhere. Ask your travel agent about it. I would think at least New Zealand would have it.
