Hey!
I heard that in the States, the airport official will cut your lock to inspect your luggage? Is this true? What am we supposed to do, if we cant use combination or key locks? IF they cut the locks off, wont it be unsafe then, as its easy to steal your stuff and put illegal items in your luggage? Im really confused and scared now, cos it will be my first overseas trip, and will be going in a few months time. |

Hey Jen,
There are speacial locks that you can buy for America and the air port offical have the master key for them so they can open and lock them again, i think you can buy them at most laugage places, well thats were we have brought ours, hope that helps. Tash |

Even if you have the special TSA locks, you still might end up with no locks at the other end. This happened to my mother. Now they actually recommend you don't lock luggage at all. Such is the reality of things now in America. Do not question it! We must accept this for our own wellbeing as patriotic acts for our own national safety. Think of the children! www.petersofkensington.com.au currently have a good sale price on the tsa approved locks as i just bought some. Last time i travelled i did not have the approved locks and had my bags checked 5 times all the did was place a note inside my bag saying that my bag had been checked along with my broken lock....it gets expensive when your travelling and having to buy new locks all the time !!!!

I wouldn't bother - I spent $50 on those TSA approved locks for my boyfriend and I and we both had ours cut off by the time we got to NY (interesing they were still on when we arrived in LA) and they used bolt cutters and cut the actual zip on the suitcase and stuffed it.
If a master key can open the lock then whats the point anyway? Its the USA, not Thailand. I wouldn't worry. Just carry valuables in your hand luggage. |

Yep, I was thinking about getting those TSA locks but I reckon you're spot on - there's no point in putting locks on if they're just going to cut them of and/or damage your suitcase in the process! I'm just gonna get locks to use once I'm in the country, when my bags are in hotels, etc. |

Ive got the locks on my suitcase and i travelled to the states from Australia on wednesday. i didnt lock my bag on the plane but while im in the hotel and im out for the day its locked. im not going to worry for the planes just in case they do want to check my bag.

Hi, I don't lock my luggage when flying only when I am in the hotels....actually, I went to the dollar store and got a bunch of zip ties and use them on my luggage and then cut them off and toss them afterwards - you get over a hundred of them for a dollar!

Hey.
My wife and I intend travelling with a hard case (Samsonite) combination lock bag. Has anyone ever experienced a problem with these types of bag at the airports etc. Curious to know...... |

I have one of those suitcases that is hard-sided with a combination lock built into it. One times it showed up on the luggage conveyor belt with the main lock popped open but the two side clips were still closed, thus preventing the suitcase from breaking open and my stuff from flying everywhere. Other than that I have never had a problem. London, Paris & Amsterdam ~ May 18-27, 2007 |
