I went to a travel clinic and got all kinds of information on Thailand, Cambodia and Laos (Asian Adventure Tour in Jan. 2010).
All three countries are listed as having high "terrorist threats". I think this has to do with political unrest. Anyway, I still plan on going and am excited but also a little nervous...The info from the travel clinic telling of all the dangers there are for tourists in these countries... Anybody have any safety advice for southeast asia? I will be traveling with my boyfriend. |

Those warnings are always issued by travel clinics as well as government departments. They basically need to justify their existence as well as cover themselves by making citizens aware.
Thailand has always had lots of attempted coup since the 70's and they can cause turmoil and disruption but most travellers who are there tend to aviod political rallies/demonstrations.The only problem can be the delays for flight schdules when the government declares shutdowns of services etc. The real things to be aware of are the scams which are prevalent in that part of SEA and also the occurence of petty theft, bag snatching, pickpocketting. This site identifies the commonly occuring scams: http://www.bangkokscams.com/ Sunburn, dehydration from heat, exhaustions from tropical humidity are the main concerns. |
