Going on Asian Adventure in Jan. 2010.

When we're in Laos, we're going to be staying in a guest house. Does this mean we're going to be staying with a family for a night?

I'm a vegetarian and I know most traditional southeast asian food contains seafood, meat, etc. I can deal with the fish sauce but do you think I will have a problem voicing my vegetarian needs while staying in the guest house?

In S.E. Asia a guesthouse is essentially a cheaper motel( something very simple, small and basic) not really a private person's house. Those are marketed as "home stays".

For vegetarians there will certainly be lots of variety and is not a problem. SE Asia has lots of unique tropical vegetables i.e kangkung( a type of water spinach),bok choi, choi sam ,4 angle beans. The variety is almost endless. The cooks over there will gladly fry up the types that you like in traditional recipes. Tofu is also readily available and is actually part of the diet in SEA.
