Hi i am going on one of the vietnam trips and i have heard that your not supposed to wear clothes which are too revealing. however in peoples photos and clips on youtube people seem to be fine wearing anything, but is that ok if we visit a temple or something? or should i make sure i have longer more acceptable clothing for things like that? i do plan on taking a warmer set of clothes, but its not like i will want to wear that stuff around all day just to visit a temple, etc.

SE Asian countries are all tropical countries whereby the high humidity and also constant 32-35 C temps make it kind of impractical to wear long sleeves and trousers. The only time that locals wear trousers are when they are going to a temple or any fully airconditioned place- i.e shopping centre, high end restaurant.

If you're going to Sapa certainly bring warm clothes. You might be surprised especially in winter months Dec- Feb - occasionally there is even light snow.

For any temples in S.E. Asia ,casual wear is perfectly acceptable for tourists.

If you're concerned just bring a pair of long convertible trousers( those that can be zipped off to become shorts) and a collared shirt.

Thanks for that.

Also from anyone who has been on this tour were hiking shoes required for the sapa extension?

The itinery says that you do need hiking shoes, but I was wondering if sandshoes were fine, or are special walking shoes needed?

The terrain around Sapa is essentially mountanious with lots of rice terraces so its best to wear a pair of well worn in hiking boots. You can wear normal shoes but there is a real risk of spraining your ankles, slipping, falling heavily on these hikes. Some people do wear running shoes and are lucky but some are a little careless and cause injury to themselves.

If you're going in winter certainly consider a pair of hiking boots with goretex lining.
