Hi All,
Thought I would start this topic just for some laughs. I'm Australian and I have heard some pretty weird stories and assumptions about the contry from other tavellors I have meet. So I was woundering if anyone would like to share some of them. Or if anyone has heard stories about Australia and would like to know if they are true please share. Also if anyone has heard some strange words or sayings they would like to know what they mean feel free to ask. For example: Australian's do not keep Kangaroos as pets. Nor do we wrestle Crocadiles for fun. Maccas = McDonald's HJ = Hungry Jacks/Burger King. Salvo's = Salvation Army This message has been edited. Last edited by: JenShep, |

I don't really have any stories but I always here the same assumption.
I think there were a few people on my tour that though originally that all of Australia was like the outback and that they were going to see spiders and snakes in the more populated areas. Also people I talk to about my trip also have this preconception. For me I thought Australia would have been a lot more arid than it was. but to be fair I was only in NSW and coastal Queensland which as far as I know get a decent amount of rain. I'm sure that Victoria and SA are far more like that. Reefs and Rainforests Feb 15-Mar 2, 2009 |

Australia is the land of extremes.
For example back in Feburay Australia had the worst fire season on records in Victoria, but also at the same time Queensland was having it's worst floods since 1974. If you went on the Reefs and Rainforest Tour the only things you would have seen is the east coast. which is the most highly populated area of Australia because of it's access resources. Most of the deserts lie in the central and north-western part of the country. As for the spider and snakes, Australia has 20 of the worlds most venomous snakes, in saying that the only time I have seen any of them are in zoos. Spiders are common everywhere, and for the most part you never see them. This message has been edited. Last edited by: JenShep, |

haha I love this topic! I live in South West Qld about 2 hours west of Brissy (Brisbane) lol and I used to live on a farm where we got lots of snakes and spiders!! but they were usually only pythons which are ok..
Vic and SA get alot more rain than QLD we're in the middle of a drought at the moment and everything up here is soo dry! North QLD gets a lot more rain though so it's always gorgeous..and like JenShep said we have ALOT of extremes all at once! When I was in America we were talking to some of the locals and they asked us about drop bears haha we totally milked it and carried on about how they'll just fall out of the trees and gouge at your eyes haha and I asked a waiter once where the loo was and she looked at me like I was from Mars! ummm yeah and we use alot of slang I think we're just lazy.. |

Least you didn't say dunny. Pythons aren't bad, they keep the rats away. They had to remove a 3.2 & 5.5M (males) python in the roof of one of the local boating clubs about a month ago. Took three men to capture the larger one and lifted one of them off the ground, the funny thing there was another 6.3M (female) one still in the roof. |
