I like the idea of writing down each days highlights at the end of the day in a journal, but it is also something I probably wouldn't share with people. Well I wouldn't go to the hassle of typing it up once I got home.
I would like to blog, so my friends can be kept up to date as I move around. But I am not sure what the computer situation may be like in NY/Canada and whether I will have time every day to get online.
What do people prefer?
And what journals or blog sites do you recommend?

If you like the ideas of a journal and a travel blog, then why not do both? I personally prefer travel blogs over journals. I like for people at home to follow my travels, and I am not diligent enough to update a journal every day. But it really is only a matter of personal preference.
There will be plenty of internet cafes in NY and the Canadian cities. Everyone spends different amounts of time in Internet cafes while traveling, so just update as often as it suits you. My favorite blog site is www.travelblog.org, but other popular ones are blogspot.com and bootsnall.org.
I love the idea of being able to blog as you travel but, the way I way write (really in depth and really long), I would end up spending most of my day on a computer instead of exploring the city I'm in!
Instead I have taken to writing notes as I go and then, about once a week I spend an hour sending a massive email to my family and friends.
Little did I know until very recently, my mum has printed pretty much every email I have ever sent from my travels and so now, I have this awesome file of memories. I love it!
We had internet access at the Milford Plaza (in New York), but you were charged $5.00 for 20 minutes. Dunno about what type of access you'll find at your stops in Canada, but I would assume there's internet cafes.
I'd do both, journal and blog. I kept a journal with me to write in at night before bed, but I also kept people updated with Facebook.
