I was really nervous about traveling alone. But I love how this site is set up. I was able to chat with a few ppl before I go. I am going on my first ever Contiki in May. I'm staying 4 days in LA and doing the Wild Western. I'm pumped and already thinking of other trips!!

Go ALONE! I just happened to see this forum, I traveled last summer alone and I LOVED IT! I'm 22 and had just graduated from college and needed a break. I have a ton of close friends and a long term boyfriend, but I did the month long European Vista alone and it was great!

Going alone you get to choose what YOU want to do each day and not have to worry about anyone but yourself.

On my tour of 48 people only 5 girls (I'm a girl) were solo- and about 15 guys went alone.

Contiki has a way of making you meet everyone so you don't worry about not finding friends, it will happen automatically! Plus you can choose who you hang out with each day- do you want to go out with the heavy drinkers each night? Or go to a quiet cafe and have coffee with an interesting couple?

If the only the stopping you is the idea of going alone- you're crazy! GO!

Hey Clare-Oz, I too am planning on travelling alone. I hope to do the European Highlights Tour in Sept 07. The plan is to go to Italy first for a week to meet up with my folks/relatives, then join the contiki by myself on Sept 21 for the tour. I shouldn't have any trouble taking time of work etc but am a bit skeptical about travelling alone. I'm 24 and never been overseas before. I've been to different cities around Oz both alone and with friends but another country with total strangers is a big call. I've read mixed reviews about contiki on the web, however, friends that have done it definately recommend it. I'm a pretty easy going go-with-the-flow kinda guy but am a bit worried about getting along with everyone else. I usually dont like travelling on my own but feel this tour will do me some good!
I haven't booked anything yet but was looking for any advice/tips/guidance?
Cheers

I did a Contiki solo style once before and I absolutely loved it. If people wanted to do things with me, it was great, but I didn't feel obligated to go with anyone which meant that I got to see and do what I wanted. Also, I now have about 40 friends across the country that I didn't have before. Going solo is NOT a bad thing.

What I would say to anyone not sure about travelling on their own is "just do it".
I made my first solo trip two years ago. I was ment to be travelling with a friend, but they had to drop out because of work problems. By going on my own, I met and spoke to loads more people than if I'd travelled with someone.
I did my first Contiki back in October and loved every minute of the experience. You meetso many different people.

So, I've been wanting to goto Europe for almost 2 years, but never got around to saving money. Started doing some serious planning last Sept after my grad from college, but dropped it because of my crappy job, but now I switched to a new job which has tons of flexibility and lots of PTO, I finally get to goto Europe, wohoo!

Anyone doing the Mediterranean Highlights tour during august? I'm thinking of doing that and then goto Vienna for 7 days to visit my friend who will be moving there this July (free room, cha ching!).

Hows the plane ticket pricing through Contiki? I'd like to fly into Spain and fly out of Vienna. Should I just goto a travel agent for that?

Pood,

I would go to a travle agent or just look online to get an idea of flight costs and availability. I've found that the flights are much cheaper than what contiki offers. Usually by a few hundred dollars.

Daniel 22yrs from Perth Western Australia
I did want to go solo on my first Contiki (newzealand skiing), but I'm bringing a friend along, because I want that security of knowing someone there. Bit sissy I guess but I've never traveled overseas. I'm more likely that i'll will hang around new people that I'll meet there and only see him here and there anyway.
due to the fact that I can Ski pretty well and I dont need to go on the Jr slops...lol.
But I'm sure next time I'll be doing it SOLO. I recon it'll really will be the only way to travel.

Anyone going to NewZealand on the 23rd of July please msg me or become a friend at my MySpace Page: www.myspace.com/leighton1984.

But, one thing that is stopping me is the fact that I now have a career, quitting is not a problem I can do that but, it's finding another job when I get back with a similar salary. We'll I'm about to become in this situation. I’m sure that my situation maybe a bit different to yours, but in 3 months I’ll be traveling alone, times with fiends and sometimes with new friends I meet on the way.
I have no regrets of quitting my job and I’m not really worried about the need of finding a new one. I hope to work a bit around the globe doing your average backpacker type jobs and maybe something in what my career is.
What it comes down to is you can either stay-in what you doing and travel latter, or you can go explore the world while you’re young, energetic and fit and see that there is more things in the word than making money.
Money is great to have, but don’t let greed of making money control what you do. you're only young once.
Make enough to get by and have fun.
