Contiki USA has suspended it's visits to Tijuana due to safety concerns.

Please read this for more information regarding suspended visits to Tijuana and the other options that will be available to you if you are traveling on a USA tour.

No this is not permanent, the US Govt has issued a travel advisory for Tijuana as the link above explains. Included visits to Tijuana will resume after it is deemed safe.

Being a Southern California native. I can tell you that San Diego is way better than TJ. Go to Old Town San Diego and you can still get all the good mexican flavor and margaritas you can handle. And for night life there is plenty to do in Downtown San Diego or the strip of bars in Pacific Beach. Plus the beaches throughout San Diego are much cleaner than in TJ.

I went to Tijuana in April of 2007.
Even then i didnt feel safe.
I literally clung onto my bag the whole time.
None of our group enjoyed ourselves, none of us felt safe.
I was happy to leave the place.

again... southern california born and raised right here! TJ is NOT worth it! lady_o is right, it is freaken ghetto over there! I won't even go over to spend the day anymore and I live 3 hours away. It's not worth it, you're gonna have way more fun in SD going to the bars and clubs, and it's 100 times more safe and again they have just as good mexican food! Everything happens for a reason!!

I also live in SD and not long ago I a friend in the Navy who went to TJ with some buddies and even they said they were nervous. Old Town is much better and safer to get margaritas at and Downtown is much safer and way more fun to party in!

Yeah, TJ is GHETTO... San Diego is very nice and has lots to do... The Gaslamp Quarter is very nice with bars and places to hang out in... AVOID TJ at all costs... I would hope that Contiki just removes TJ permanently from its tour..

HAHA, this is really funny

TJ is kind of a place that you go to when youre 18 because you cant drink in the states... its a bit crazy and out of control like that

I went there once, got left by myself at 3am, turns out my friends had got held up by the Federalis (sp? - mexican cops) and had to pay them to be released... those things acutally do happen!

anyways, youre not missing out much - it is pretty ghetto, its good for cheap alcohol and prescription drugs (that you can buy over the counter there)

No worries - San Diego is way more awesome! Gaslamp district, Mission Bay, Padre's stadium is downtown by the water - have fun! Big Grin

Also as a San Diego native....it is NOT WORTH IT!! I get so nervous driving around there (we usually rent a car anytime we drive into Mexico because we are so nervous about our car getting stolen). I remember just driving down to Papas & Beer in a taxi that had no seatbelts, and guys were standing around with guns (I don't know if they were cops or part of the military). But they were just standing on random streets just holding there guns. Many times we thought we were gonna die.

lets just prompt this discussion and state that we're only talking about TJ - we dont want people to get scared of going to mexico - especially since Contiki just came out with their new Mexico tours, which do look kinda awesome Big Grin
