Be honest....how many people get sick on the tour? How much should I budget daily for food and drinks? Is the food good? What kind of things do you eat? I've had all my shots, and I'm loaded up with various preventative meds...but still unsure of eating and drinking in Egypt....I'm paranoid of getting sick!! Do they warn you on the tour of what stuff to eat and not to eat?

Any tips and tricks would be appreciated....

With regards to your questions. Lots of people actually do get sick on this tour . I would estimate around the 80% mark will get some kind of problems with the food.It also depends on the severity. Some will react so badly that they are totally immobilized and will need medical attention.

The hot food provided on this tour is actually of a very high standard especially on the nile cruise. There is usually Western and local types.Egyptian food typically consists of beans and some people are not used to digesting this diet and hence run into problems.Might be a good idea to introduce some beans into your diet prior to travelling there.

However the cold food and the desserts are usually quite questionable. Its to do with the standard of hygene. Although the food looks well presented , in the kitchen Tamar toilet hands and his colleages are busy at work preparing your meals.Immunity boosting prior to your trip via increased consumption of probiotics such as yougurt and yakult will help minimize or totally eliminate this problem.

Meals that are not included on tour would cost around the 5-10 USD mark depending on where the tour manager takes you.Drinks are relatively affordable overall.

Some people also get carried away with consumption and hence get problems. The food is served on a unlimited buffet basis and some can really become greedy and overindulge in food only to suffer the next day. If you're going to "pig out" on tour bear in mind that there is a high possibility of ending up walking like an Egyptian the next day all the way to the toilet. Ha!Ha!.

I did this tour in January and had a great time. There were two buses on our tour and all of one bus except 2 or 3 people (me included) did not get sick. The rest of the people on our bus were sick for a day or two. I would say proceed with caution. If it looks questionable don't eat it, if you get it and it taste weird... don't eat it. I drank only bottled water and the only fruit I ate was bananas because I was peeling those myself. I won't lie... I lost 7 lbs. on the tour because I really limited myself on what I would and wouldn't eat. I had tons of rice and bread and took a handful of granola bars and little packs of trail mix with me from home. Those really came in handy on those long days when you go hours without eating anything and when I didn't eat much at the meals. I didn't starve but like I said, proceed with caution. All I know is I didn't get sick so it worked for me.

I had 20 people on my tour and 10-15 people got sick. None were so sick that they couldn't do stuff on the tour. It's hard to say how sick people were though because most were pretty discreet about it. I would bring some Imodium with you and maybe an antibiotic if your doctor will prescribe it.

I felt a little off one day, took some meds and was ok, though didn't feel great. I ate all the foods that were offered on the ship and at the hotel, including fruits and salads. Stay away from street food, and don't use ice. I found the food was pretty good and I'm a picky eater, most food was kabobs - there was always a chicken option. I would suggest bringing a couple snacks since sometimes it's a long time between meals and on some of the early morning breakfasts were a little lacking.

On my tour we had 40 people, and as far as I know only 2 people got really sick.

One of the girls had some kind of flu bug, don't think it was related to food. A guy got really sick from eating a McChicken burger, he was the only one to get that type of burger when we went. I guess my group was lucky Smiler

Definately stay away from street food unless your guide says it's ok. Food in the hotels are a little bit pricey, but snacks (potato chips, chocolate etc.) and drink from the street are cheap. I found that we didn't have time to stop at food places, so maybe stock up when you do find one.

Oh and everyone..... I brushed my teeth using the Egyptian tap water everyday haha, and I was fine Big Grin

Also they give you a free bottle of water most days of the tour. If your planning to get drunk bring alcohol with you! It's very expensive!!!

Ok I think that's it, have fun on your tour Smiler
