Very modest clothing. I suggest hitting a travel type store that carries ladies travel clothing that is light weight and has an spf in the material. I would assume they'd ship over sees but Roal Robbins www.rei.com are two that I use that are light weight. I have some exiofficcio brand pants that only weigh 3 oz and zip off at the knees.

Wow, that's an awesome website for Egypt. I'd really like to take this trip but probably won't be able to afford to go until 2009. I'm soooo tempted to just put it all on my credit card and pay it off later. But I figure I should probably pay off the debt I already have before I dig a deeper hole. But I don't know how long I can wait!!!!

I recently went to Egypt in Nov 2007. Unless you are going to the Oasis, you do not need to worry about what you wear. They are very accepting of tourists wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts. Just make sure you use plenty of sunscreen as the sun is almost as brutal as the Caribbean sun. The temperatures in the valley of the kings area will be well over a hundred as they were in Nov and it is cooler in the Cairo area. The majority of the native Egyptians dress in western wear and you will be fine with khakis/shorts and a short sleeved tee. I thought I would have to cover up and brought a bunch of long sleeved shirts and I wished I had more tees with me. The biggest hassle you will have is the merchants in the Luxor area. Be prepared to be annoyed and want to smack them. They will chase after you with crap to buy and hassle you to no end. Enjoy, it's a trip of a lifetime and make sure you go inside the great pyramid!!!

My friend was there in November for 3 weeks with a private local tour guide. I was concerned about clothes since i had read a lot on the internet about dressing "very modestly". She said that tourists are everywhere and Egyptians are very accepting on Western dress. She said use common sense (i.e. no hot pants, short shorts, mini skirts and maybe avoid spegetti strap or very low cut tanks/shirts) but otherwise dress how're your comfortable, although sometimes it's better to cover up more just to protect yourself from the sun.
Mosques are another thing though, respect the religion and she advised getting a long wrap around skirt that goes down to the ankles to just tie up when going in and to cover your sholders and maybe your hair. Many mosques have something that they will give you to cover up if you are not covered enough, but I would have something just in case. Guys don't have to worry about their dress for the most part. The last thing she said is you won't want to go anywhere without a hat, sun tan lotion and bug spray! |

You'll be able to get away in pretty much anything, but if you wear revealing clothes you'll probably come back whinging about unwanted attention. The short answer is the culture you are going to is religious and conservative. They see a lot of tourists wearing spaghetti strap tops and shorts but that doesn't mean they respect it and it doesn't offend them.
You can get away in whatever you like, but just know a bit about their culture and decide to what degree you want to show respect. You'll also get better deals when you shop if you look conservative |
