im travelling with a friend, and franco, you arent so solo anymore! you have me and cam now haha. we are from the central coast nsw

im hoping to save up $6000 for spending money, but im a girl and i will be shopping and probably not drinking as much as a guy.. and this is for my whole trip that is for 50 days around europe and america. i have no idea if i am saving enough but it works out at about $100 per day so i hope so!

i have a question of my own... are people taking suitcases or backpackers bags? and are girls taking handbags or backpacks?... im not really a backpack sorta gal.

I will probably be taking a suitcase rather than a big backpackers bag, only for the reason that I'm capable of carrying a suitcase up a number of flights of stairs if required.

Reading the forums, you don't really need a big backpackers bag if you're not camping, the only benefit comes if elevators where we are staying are either really slow or are broken at the time, as you are not required to carry your bags everywhere with you.

I guess it depends on what your trip is going to be like in America too as you might need a big backpackers bag depending on your trip type.

In terms of budgeting, ultimately (obviously) the more money you have, the better. Looking at exchange rates at the moment, the Oz Dollar will get you about .56 Euros, so your $100 a day will therefore be about 56 Euros a day. So if you work off that, it might give you a better idea of whether that is enough for each day of the trip (when you factor in things such as Optional Activities, lunches, purchases etc).

I think the Oz Dollar is a little stronger against the US Dollar than the Euro, so you may get a little more bang for your buck in the States.

As for handbag over backpack for girls, I may be speaking a little out of turn here, but maybe you could take both. Just place your empty handbag in your backpack when travelling on the bus and when you go out etc you have the option of either (or both) depending on where you're going and the time of day etc.

I'll ask my GF though and see what she plans to do as obviously I could be talking complete garbage and she has her fair share of handbags.

Anyway, hope that helps somewhat.
